We need a way of ranking search results as per User Role and the ranking should be relevant to department and category the user role.

Our initial thinking is to create a ranking profile per role and then boost the department and category.

Role A      = Department A + Category C + Category D
Role B      = Department B + Department B + Category F

Do we have any other options?

Would the Best Bets feature work better for you?  You can set a keyword to display certain results at the top and it can be targeted to specific users.

Unfortunately not, we have built a custom results page where the results are being grouped and our design doesn’t currently cater for Best bets.

I accomplished what I needed through using xrank and boosting values in a managed property.
