Joomla category page not showing after creating it in joomla admin

My joomla web site is not displaying my category page after I created it. I get an error page saying: "Warning: file_get_contents(http://...) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 404 Component not found in..."

I wanted to duplicate a "careers" category page already up on the site and I noted all of its parameters. Then I selected "new" in the category section of joomla admin and created a new category with the parameters from the careers category and hit save. The only thing different is i chose a different title and title alias. But my new page is not coming up. Also I noticed when I select a parent category the category I just created says "trashed category" in the drop down menu in joomla admin. Am i missing something?

I realized that I had to associate the category with a menu item in order for the page to come up.
