Try pressing F15 (and F14), these are the keyboard shortcuts for brightness, maybe something got bumped out of whack?

Well, that is a detail you left out. Plus you never gave feedback that you tried it (did you try it?). You said
[it] is so dark that it doesn't look like the problem is the inverter or the back light
You never said that it doesn't turn on.
Does it power up?
What kind of screen is it (cinema display etc.)?
Does it make any sound?
Does the power light come on?
Are there any other symptoms?
Have you tried other monitors?

Ok,
i give it back to my friend...
and the machine does power up, but no screen disply...
ir does make noise and all of that, but no screen display...
and i did not tried a sencond monitor since this is a one piece machine
and did not have any adapter plug to tried with a second monitor to display.

since this imac is kinda hard to take a part i didn't wanted to opened and take
a closer look to the inverter or the back light.
