Maybe someone with more SEO experience can comment further, but in my experience, submitting your site to search engines does almost nothing to help your ranks.

It's fairly well known that the major search engines will rank  your site higher based on a number of factors - one major factor is how many other sites link to yours.

Of course, if other sites are linking to your site, you won't  have to submit them to search engines because it will be crawled automatically. That being said, you may wish to get a head start on some of the major search engines:
Google
http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
Bing
http://www.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx
Yahoo
http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html

Spend time making your content relevant and the spiders will do the rest.
