Hello EE Community,

I have been struggling with this one for awhile and read  posts here concerning the below error, but no luck. I keep getting the below error on backupexec box when trying to backup exchange 2007 from backupexec remote computer. I have rebooted the exchange server recently, but again, getting writer errors as per below vssadmin list writers command. I checked the recent updates on the exchange server ( 2008 R2 64bit) and do not see anything related to vss writers. When i tried to backup the exchange store using the local exchange 'windows backup tool' it initialized fine and began the backup process. Not sure where to go from here outside of rebooting again, any help appreciated.

Dear
In order to better troubleshoot the issue, please help collect the following information:
1.      On Exchange server 2007, open Event Viewer, navigate to application, right click it and save it as .evtx file and send it to v-rocwan@microsoft.com.

2.      On Exchange server 2007, open EMS, run the following command and post the result into the forum for further analyze:

VSSadmin list writers

vssadmin list providers

If the Exchange writer is not in stable state (in “Retryable error” state as shown below) then try to restart the information store service on the Exchange server, and check Exchange writer is in stable state.

3.      Did you enable CCR or LCR for the mailbox server?

4.      Copy the commands below into notepad, and save the file as “vsstracing.bat”. Run the same to make the registry changes required to configure VSS tracing.

net stop swprv

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceFile /t REG_SZ /d C:\trace.txt /f

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceLevel /t REG_DWORD /d 0xffffffff /f

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceEnterExit /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceToFile /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceToDebugger /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceFileLineInfo /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceForceFlush /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

After running the batch file that enables tracing, we need to reproduce the issue. Once we have received the errors, stop the VSS services. You can do this by running the following commands on the command prompt.

net stop VSS

net stop SWPRV

Then, disable VSS tracing by running the following command:

reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /f

The trace file is created on the root of the C drive. Send the trace file to analyze.

I also suggest you to reboot the server once and then check the issue ,it seems that server has not rebooted before taking backup.

Hope this helps.

What Is Threat Intelligence?

Threat intelligence is often discussed, but rarely understood. Starting with a precise definition, along with clear business goals, is essential.

I rebooted the exchange server, ran the vsstracing.bat listed above ( all commands completed successfully), however, no vss  log file appeared in the root of C  . However, the job appears completed successfully on the exchange server, all writers stable . Fyi, there is NO CCR or LCR for the exchange server.

The job did fail again ON OTHER SERVERS  this time with errors "V-79-57344-65072 - The connection to target system has been lost. Backup set canceled." . Wondering if this is all related to a bigger issue perhaps. I checked some of the threads concerning V-79-57344-65072 and have enabled "Remote agent TCP dynamic port range 10010-10050" prior to job running. The job log/set information shows "V-79-57344-65072 The connection to target system has been lost. Backup set canceled." but in the set information gives "Backup completed on 2/21/2011 at 9:47:43 PM." "Backed up 121 files in 2 directories. Processed 86,919,256,644 bytes in  2 hours,  57 minutes, and  2 seconds.Throughput rate: 468 MB/minCompression Type: Hardware". So not really sure why there is an error and a backup completed in set information. Will enable -debug on the 2 servers giving the new error and repost, any suggestions appreciated.

The connections to the target system has lost error suggest that their might be issues with the remote agent on the remote server connection has been interrupted, hence would request you to chk the event vwr. for beremote issue

I was able to correct with a combination of the vss writer updates, backup exec updates, and Microsoft exchange tools 2007 installed on media server. Everything seems stable now, thanks to all for your help.
