Reading a single excel file from sharepoint

I'm looking for a method (vbscript, powershell, vb.net) to read from a single excel spreadsheet located on share point.
I've tried some examples online, but can't seem to get past the 401 - unauthorized error.

I don't quite follow the first step on that second link...the first link appears to be what I've already tried...

You mean the following bit?

"Copy path of document library and add the path into trusted location to enable excel services."

There are step by step instructions on doing that.

You do have access to central administrator of the Sharepoint Server right?
