I have seen where pcl 6 driver messes things up. Try the pcl 5 version. Happened to me this morning with HP 4000.
Hope this helps

You'll need to use the HP-UPD for Win 7.  We have several in our environment, and this is what works well for us.  There is PCL5, 6, and PS support for those printers with the UPD.

Here's some documentation on it, since there is a lot you can do with this driver from an Admin's pov.

Here's the download page.

Ok, so I installed the universal printer driver. It is so weird, if you right click the printer properties it opens this dialogue box for HP Universal Printing PCL 5. it does not show me the printer. It has folders

recently used printers
find a printer

I cannot get to the printer, what am I doing wrong?

I would firstly uninstall the UPD.  Then the downloaded (unextracted) UPD file is what you'll extract with something like 7zip.  In other words, do not use the UPD installer to install this driver, because it provides a different kind of functionality.

Once you have it extracted to a folder of your choice, (still at this point the driver is NOT installed) open 'Devices and Printers' > highlight any printer, so that you get the 'Print server properties' button on the toolbar at the top > from Print Server Properties, click the 'Drivers' tab > Add > follow the prompts > install the HP Universal Printing driver without the version number, which should be the first option in the list.

Once the driver is installed to the PC, you can open your printer's 'Printer Properties' page, and click the Advanced tab > New Driver.  Then choose the newly installed driver.
