crystal reports syntax

yes I am using a Group field, I would like to know what is the syntax to read the string so I can group by lets say the first 4 char.

I tryied left(table,4)
did not come out  effective

for instance I have
mottos
mottos
mottos
mottossgs

I want the above to group together by the string above.

Did you create a formula?

   Left({YourField},4)  

That should give you the first 4 characters of the field.
