Can I put test the Amanda backup such that both server and client are on the same server, .... just to test on the testing server first before moving to production environment ?

seem like the paper is quite difference than waht on my Red hat 5.

eg. under /etc/xinetd.d/, the file is amandaidx instead of that "amandaserver" mentioning in that paper. Alos, user name is marked as "amanda" insttead of "amandabackup"....

I use the Amanda in Red Hat, package is amanda-server.i386  2.5.0p2-8.el5. So, no sure how to carry on ...

Thanks
can you pls tell me from where you downlaod this package..
let me check once.. what diffrence is exectly u are facing
i think this paper is for amanda-backup_server-2.5.1p2-1.rhel4.i386.rpm
rhel 4 and 2.5.1p2 and you are using rhel5 with 2.5.0p2.
you just try with the same rpm which is mentioned in this paper..
some times update version are coming with some changes..

Based on the document , while I do Step 5 with "amanda" user, it could find the command "ammt".

However, if i run as root, it works but seem like amanda should have the right to do this. Any idea ?

Thanks

Sorry, could run ammt with smanda user but running the command :
ammt -f file:/space/vtapes/DailySet1/slots status, it come out with Permission denied.

I have already run the chown amanda:disk /space/vtapes before. Any idea ?

Some questions during setting up the Amanda

1. Under the DailySet1/slots, I will create directories slot 1 -25 to stimultate 25 tapes. What's the size of each directory (tape) ? Does it mean that when amdump DailySet1 is running, it will use fill up the size defined slot1 and then the remaining accordingly ?

2. When schedule the Mon - Fri backup under crontab, will it start the override the preivous slot 1.

3. How can configure the backup such that Mon - Fri 's backup will be kept, and then reuse the space afterwards.

4. Is it possible to configure in such a way that Mon - Fri will be backed into each physical HDD ?
 How to modify it ?

Tks
If you are doing this in test enviroment.. then assign the path of any directory.. this bkp will called as a disk backup.
1)Now the backup is based on its type.. http://www.geekgirls.com/windows_backup_strategies_table.htm
Its depend on ur stratgies which you are using ..
2) We are seting up the Leble name of disk Mon, Tue, Wed,.. like that.. when we are taking bkp on monday then backup will go in monday tape.. as tuesday n wedness day..
But if your tape is full then bkp will fail, now if you have retension period for 2 weeks then after two week it will override the backup.
3) Check your backup policy which you made.. if you kept backup in full backup tape then you can format your other tapes if they have no use. or it will be automatically override after retension period.
4) Check its backup policy you can add disk instead of tape. you need to edit its policy .

To clarify my understanding, I may need to

- create Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur and Fri instead of a single DailySet1. Hence, amdump in crontab will be setup as amdump Mon, amdump Tue, ... correct

- Suppose I need to have a full backup daily. Which setting should I configure ? Do I need to only a single slot1 as allocated enough size of the backup, say 400Gb ? In the article, it create 25 directories (slot1 - 25) under DailyBackup. What's the intention of doing this ?

- Do I need to configure anything for Monday backup in order to override the previous data stored under slot1 directory ?

Great Thanks.

What w\i suggest to my client for backup stratgie go for
Mon. to Fri  go for incrimental and sat.. go for full bakup..
by that we can save the utlization of space. util system process.. and time..

Nameing conversion is the best policy for every thing.. Mon.. Tue.. is best labeling format instead of Slot 1 Slot 2.. its easy to understand..

Ist let me know you are taking backup on disk or tape..

For testing purpose, I will use the disk first. We may consider the tape once we confrim it works fine for us. Will that make any difference ?

BTW, where can I define the incremental for Mon - Fri ? I get confusing as Mon - Fri is created under DailySet1. So, how does amdump DailySet1 know to put into the right Mon, Tue .. ?

Originally, I think I should create Mon, Tue in instread of DailySet1, DailySet2. On Mon, I use amdump Mon, and on Tue, I use amdump Tue. For each backup, it will write to each slot1, slot2 under it. Am I correct ?

Testing purpose u can do any thing..
Its not make any big diffrence..

read its command man file u can get btr idea,
what i was suggesting you to use Mon-Tue instead of DailySet1 or Daily Set2..
at the end of week when u will take full backup u can remove or overrite your Mon-Tue Set.
But no need to confused more do how u feel comforatble..

Try it once.. i think it should work..

please mark if solve..
