LDAP is a standard to connect to hierarchical databases, almost like SQL is for relational DB

It's a standard so it's available on linux and windows

Microsoft Active Directory is a hierarchical database with the possibility to access it using ldap (with little work)
Linux and other UNIX can use ldap to extract their user data from a hierarchical DB

Lot's of LDAP software are bundled with an invisible hierarchical backend and LDAP as frontend to work with it.
It's like relational DB where you need to use SQL to access the backend which is invisible to you

There are a lot of them, the standar ones are:

MS Active Directory
Novell something
Oracle Berkeley DB
HDB
even SQL database :)

The list of backends used by openldap is available here: http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/756.html

Alternative.... X.400 but the X.400 is so hard to manage that they create LDAP where L is for Lightweight because X400 client are enormous

Think about LDAP as the SQL for hierarchicals DB, you HAVE to use it, your only choice is with the backend
