I have this page:
http://tinyurl.com/4c7l2oz

I have set the font weight to "lighter" on the left hand navigation, but it still looks bold to me. Any idea why this would happen?

It could be the fount doesn't have a light or thin related to it's family.  Thus reverting to regular.  Also try using 300 or 100 instead of lighter.

it might be that your css has another style decleared that is over riding your change,

try putting the style inline this will over ride the style sheet, if that works you will need to look at the other styles you have decleared and see where they are clashing

just looking at your site code, your css has no left-column class defined, defines a left-column and put your font changes there
