I am an IT technician that is making the move to Ubuntu.  I would like to learn all the basic fundementals for Ubuntu desktop as well as server.  I have found a lot of resources around the internet but I would like to purchase a good book that can teach me all the basics and configuration and I was wondering if anybody can give me good recommendations for a book that will help me out.  Thanks.

I cant give you recommendations for a good book, however, the best recommendation i have is - get a machine and install Ubuntu server on it and then use either a virtual server to install Ubuntu desktop on your workstation or use another machine.

Doing it this way will give you the fundamentals you are looking for.  - how to install, things that can go wrong on install, components to install.  There are many blogs, websites and EE of course, that have many tutorials on how to install Ubuntu.

If you really want a book to read on Linux - get the Linux for Dummies book, it will give a very general overview of Linux, but i believe it might favour the Redhat distro.

This is a good guide but it's already dated because it falls between Ubuntu releases 9.10 & 10.04.  "Ubuntu: Up and Running A Power User's Desktop Guide" By Robin Nixon: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596804855

For servers I didn't find a book but for information read, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Servers
