For a Windows PC I'd use SQL Server Compact Edition (SQL Server CE) since it's free and robust.

What can I run on the Macintosh that's free?

I forgot to say, I intend to use Entity Framework 4.0 and LINQ to Entities to communicate with this database. That's a requirements when I choose a database for the Mac OS X that I can use  Entity Framework 4.0 and LINQ to Entities.
