Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
The first thing you need to do, is to raise a purchse order for a suitablelty sized UPS.

Okay, unknown means that the virtual machine has become detached from the inventory.

Do you know if you are missing any storage datastores, because unknown would happen if datastores are missing, e.g. NFS, FC, iSCSI datastores.

Do you have a SAN, where are your virtual machines located?

Are all you virtual machines listed as unknown and greyed out, or just some?

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
Do you notice any datastores in the Summary of the host server, they are also greyed out?
0

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
In the picture below, you can see a server called Test NFS Server which is greyed-out and unknown

But if you look to the right of the properties, you can also see that the Datastore cyrus-nfs is also greyed-out, that's because the datasstore is not contatable, in this example it's down.

okay, I can see a datastore called datastore, which 3/4 VMs maybe/are located on.

four VMs are Unknown, inaccessible, and there is no datastore attached, it's missing.

Do you know where you VMs should be located?

Are these missing VMs located on your SAN?

What is you SAN?

Please check Inventory, Datastores?

Send me a screenshot?

touchsonicAuthor Commented:

Okay, from the information you've provided, the current VMs that are working and on, are stored on the local datastore called DATASTORE, which is on local disk.

it's possible that the "missing" machines are on the SAN which is currently not connected.

Can you click and highlight storage adaptor vmhba33, right click and click Rescan, ensure both tick boxes are ticked.

and see if any luns appear.

if they don't can you also check the following and send screen shots

Highligt iSCSI software adaptor and select Properties, and send me the screenshots.

Could you also check the Openfiler is running?

Can you ping 172.16.0.251 from any machine on your network?

and can you also test with telnet 172.16.0.251 3260

does the above command connect?

touchsonicAuthor Commented:
i was not able  ping t openfiler from any of my network computer, however after restarting the swich that was connected to the server 172.16.0.251 i am able to ping that now but when i try to open that thorugh web browser url its not opening i am typing http://172.16.0.251:3260

do i need to restart the virtual server or anything..?

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
oh, this is the issue, if the server is not up, your ESX server will not be able to connect.

okay login to openfiler console, with your username and password, do you know Linux?
0

touchsonicAuthor Commented:
no i dont know anything about linux..
please provide detailed steps i will follow these.. i am not able to open openfiler remotely.. i guess i have to connect the keyboard and mouse locally to the server.. what i need to do after that?
thanks for ur response

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
okay

1. login to console with root username and password.
2. type ping followed by the ip address of you ESX server? do you get response?
3. type ifconfig

when i try to log in locally it says this interface has not been implemented yet..

and it dont do anything
when i press enter again it start asking me login and password again..

do you have a login prompt?
0

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
are you using the root account?
0

touchsonicAuthor Commented:
yes..i have a login prompt, and i enter my user name there, and then it ask me my password after entering my password , it says this interface has not been implemented yet.
also it shows above log in web administrator gui interface https;//172.16.0.251:446

there is only one user name and password documented for this server, so i assume this one root account...

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
and you definately cannot ping 172.16.0.251?

normally the accont could be root, unless it's been changed, or is using ldap authentication, but if there is a network issue with the openfiler server, and it cannot reach the ldap server you'll not be able to login.

this interface has not been implemented yet.

the above is normally displayed on an incorrect username and password, or you are trying to remotely use ssh to access the server.

without access to this server, we cannot check it.

have you tried restarting it. Now it's connected to the switch.

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
does it say which version of openfiler?
0

touchsonicAuthor Commented:
it says version 2, i tried to restart the server too but no luck.., i m trying to log in through ssh using putty, but not coonnecting, yeah i can not ping the server from my computer by typing ping 172.16.0.251
it says reply from 172.16.0.109 destination not reachable

but when i try to ping it from different computer it just say destination not reachable...

i dont know why from my computer it says reply from different ip address...

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
okay, few things to check.

1. try a different network port on the switch.
2. try a different network cable.
3. is there a light on the switch port that the server is connected to?
4. is there a light on the network interface card in the openfiler server?

if you cannot ping the openfiler server, you'll not be able to ping, ssh, or browse to web interface

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
reply from 172.16.0.109 destination not reachable

this is probablt your ip address, maybe on vista or windows 7.

Windows XP, WIndows 2003, don't say that.

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
you are definately using a username called root and not openfiler.

touchsonicAuthor Commented:
i m using openfiler as user name , but i dont know the password for root user...? is there any deault password for root user, i tried user root password root and user root password empty no luck...

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
ah, this is the incorrect username for the console.

you must use root

try openfiler as the password, or pasword

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
or blank password
