For no apparent reason mmc.exe just started hogging 40% of the CPU on our sbs2003  sp2 server.  How can I troubleshoot this?  Thanks in advance for your interest.

my first point to look at is are the latest updates installed? I have a similar problem on 2000 server some years ago.

When did the problem start happening? did anything change in the domain? i.e new domain controller, new scripts
Is your anti virus up to date?

Maybe c:\windows\system32\mmc.exe is infected by a virus.

Try to restored a copy of mmc.exe from - c:\windows\system32\dllcache\mmc.exe

Or try to use any Online Antivirus with desinfection, like ESET NOD 32 online scanner, Microsoft Security Online Scanner or Bitdefender Online Scanner

The usage seems to spike when I Log onto the server through remote desktop.

I rebooted the server and this solved the issue.  There must have been too many open remote desktop sessions.
