Server Error in '/' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

There are many reasons why you could get such an error.  Could you explain what you were attempting to do when this error occurred?  Please give URLs for the pages that you were attempting to access that responded in the error (not full urls, something like "/_layouts/viewlsts.aspx" will be fine).

Also, please check your log files:
Right click on "My Computer", and select "manage".  Expand "Diagnostics", then expand "Event Viewer", and finally expand "Windows Logs".  Try expanding and inspecting the logs for "Application", "Security", and "System", and see if any warnings or errors come up.

On top of that, you can also go to (depending on what version of SharePoint you are running) the ULS logs for SharePoint:
MOSS 2007 - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\LOGS
SP2010 - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS

And see if anything shows up there.  It could be something as simple as a service not starting, having the wrong account being used in SharePoint or IIS (if it doesn't have the necessary permissions), or any number of things.  More detail would be appreciated!

Good luck!

here are the things you should look for :

1. Application pool in IIS : check if that is running or getting stop : Common error password changed otherwise not in custom pool
2. The site may have another applciation that it is calling thus it is referring to another web.config on file system, Do have a another application folder in IIS, Please check and see if that has a web.config, You may to modify that to show the errors

Please give more details on where do you see this error and what is the archtiecture i.e. what is the site, how many application are there in IIS under the site, How is the status of application pool, etc

Try this :

1. Backup the server and databases
2. Disconnect the server from farm by running sharepoint config wizard
3. Uninstall/Reboot/Reinistall sharepoint
4.  Reconnect to farm
5. Check the site

You would need to reconfigure the running services like excel, access as needed
