In Word, or almost any other Windows programs for that matter, press and hold the Alt key while you type 0163 on the numeric keypad at the right of the keyboard (not the numbers above the letters) and when you release the Alt key you will have a £ sign inserted wherever the cursor is at.

thanks, it works. will reward the points to you. how about for euro sign? any link where we can see the shortcuts for different symbols? thanks

To type the Euro sign in Windows, you press the alt key+0128.

I have not found a site that lists all of them.

Here is a link to a page with many alt-codes for typing International & Special Characters using the <Alt> key and the right-side numeric keypad.  <Num Lock>key must be on!
