Have you tried to install Windows XP SP3 ? IE8 should be there :)

It requires SP2 minimum.   See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/support/system-requirements.aspx

But as said earlier what error messages are you getting?

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

What Service Pack are you running of Windows XP?

In Control Panel look at System and see what version it is.

If still having problem then download Windows Installer 3.1. Install it first then try to install IE8

Also why do you not just use Windows Update Service to patch your machine up to date? Including the install of IE8.
