Use the latest release of your version (which also is the latest version).
So I recommend 12.1(22)EA14
When it has been so many releases of a version most of the bugs are gone. Then it's pretty safe to go for the latest relese of the version.
Tar-files are timeconsuming but much easier to install, so I would recommend that.

Here is a guide if you haven't installed tar-files before.
The command you use for downloading and installing your present image is:
archive download-sw /overwrite /reload tftp://x.x.x.x/c2950-i6k2l2q4-tar.121-22.EA7.tar
where x.x.x.x is the ip address of your tftp-server. you might have to add directories to the path, depending on your tftp-server.

The command even removes the old software if you don't have enough flash for two images, and then reloads the switch to boot up on the new image.

use "/reload" only if you want the switch to reboot by itself when it has downloaded the software.
If you skip "/reload" you can do a manual reload whenever you want.
