Exchange Message Count Question

I have a user, that exchange reports as having 70,000 messages in their mail store.
I did a count of all messages and came up with 30,000.  (all rough numbers)
Where could the rest of the messages be?  I know you can "recover deleted items" in outlook. Do the messages in that location count in the exchange message count?

Contacts and calendar items count as well. I've seen a user with over 6,000 contacts alone.
