SSL cert error in outlook 2007-Digital certificate error

I setup a CA on a MS 2008 Ent server.  I requested the cert within MMC certficate snapin.
I got it installed fine and good.  I requested a 1024 but user cert.  I am using outlook 2007.  Went to tools<trust center< email security and have " encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages" checked as well as " add digital signature to outgoing messages" checked.  I hit setitng sand chose the cert it saw iut but i keep getting this error message no matter what options I choose.

"microsoft office outlook cannot sign or encrypt this message because your certificate is not valid"

Check the type of the certificate
The other issue, to encrypt a message, you need to have the email recipient's public certificate to use.  Without that you would only be able to sign the outgoing email.
It depends on the type of certificate you have.  you need an e-mail certificate.
Usually you have to request the certifcate via the web http://caserver/certsrv
