SSL cert error in outlook 2007-Digital certificate error

I setup a CA on a MS 2008 Ent server.  I requested the cert within MMC certficate snapin.
I got it installed fine and good.  I requested a 1024 but user cert.  I am using outlook 2007.  Went to tools<trust center< email security and have " encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages" checked as well as " add digital signature to outgoing messages" checked.  I hit setitng sand chose the cert it saw iut but i keep getting this error message no matter what options I choose.


"microsoft office outlook cannot sign or encrypt this message because your certificate is not valid"

It depends on the type of certificate you have.  you need an e-mail certificate.
Usually you have to request the certifcate via the web http://caserver/certsrv

I requested a user certificate, this covers digital signatures i understand

Check the type of the certificate
The other issue, to encrypt a message, you need to have the email recipient's public certificate to use.  Without that you would only be able to sign the outgoing email.
