setting up proxy in ubuntu 10.04

Hi. Im setting up an ubuntu computer, in a etwork that is behind a proxy.
I have a windows computer where i have set up the proxy settings, addresses and ports.

Setting up the same infos in ubuntu network proxy settings does not help me connecting to the internet.

Firefox just says "connecting to www.google.dk" ad then times out.

Windows rus without problems.

What am I missing?

Can you ping the proxy server from the Ubuntu machine?
What proxy software are you running?
Are both machines on the same subnet?

I have not tried to ping the proxy server. im really not much into proxy settings at all.

I wrote down the settings from IE on a machine, allready running in the system.

Typed the proxy settings into IE on my win machine and concluded that I managed to use the internet on my win.

Typed the proxy settings into the network-proxy settings from the settingsmenu in ubuntu, but am not able to connect to the internet (have teamviewer on the ubuntu as well, and TV cannot connect either.

Get your Disaster Recovery as a Service basics

Disaster Recovery as a Service is one go-to solution that revolutionizes DR planning. Implementing DRaaS could be an efficient process, easily accessible to non-DR experts. Learn about monitoring, testing, executing failovers and failbacks to ensure a "healthy" DR environment.

sudo vi /etc/environment
Add the line: http_proxy="http://proxy.address:port" and save the file.  Either log out and back in or type export http_proxy="http://proxy.address:port"

This should then allow the proxy server details to take effect immediately and remain across reboots.

Test with Firefox and it should work now.

Does the proxy server require authentication?  Is it transparent authentication?  If so this opens a whole new can of worms.

Thanks! I will try this.
There is no need for typing In user and passwordas far A's i know. Managed to reach the Web  in ie without anyhow. The network is not mine, so i cannot do much about the worm issue except passing on your statement.
Ill let you know if this solves my problem.

unfortunately Im still not able to see webpages or use teamviewer on the ubuntu computer.
However, I have found out that FTP upload is working.

What does that tell us?

FTP clients will use the ftp_proxy export instead of http_proxy... which you didn't set..

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-configure-ubuntu-desktop-to-use-your-proxy-server.html#more-2584

Start firefox and instead of setting a proxy server as they do in the guide set the proxy setting to "Use System Proxy Setting".  As you will see from the guide almost every application has its own settings but you have the option of using the system proxy in most applications.

I still have not found a solution, so I have been forced to move my ubuntu machine to another location.
Is there anyway I can close a question without acceting a solution?
