mx backup

I am in need of a resouce of backup of my mx. If my clients mail server is down I would like all my email to go to a source where I can recover it once my server comes back up.

I have my own server in my office but I do not run exchange.  What companies supply this service or what open source software can I put on my server to facilitate. I know if I add a higher # mx record for my clients then the email will flow there until the lower value comes back up then it will transfer automatically all the emails.

Mail is queued at the sending server for usually a minimum of 48 hours, is it likely the recipient server will be unavailable for this amount of time?

Sadly the priority of the MX records will not help you here, spammers will target higher value MX records and also if the lower value MX is temporarily unavailable or under load then the secondary will be used.  Ligitimate emails will then go to both MX records.

The best bet is to use a queuing facility or a 3rd party cleansing solution that will receive your emails and then forward them on to you if you think 48 hours isn't going to be long enough.

Ive used www.changeip.com before, it offers storage for true MX backup and can even deliver mail to an alternative port if required (usefull for those whos ISP blocks 25).

Its cheap, the support is good... cant ask for more really.

I do not know if this fits what you plan to do but I know that zoneedit have this to add into users that have domain inside.
This is not a free option, but I use this for some years for 3 domains, and work very well.
