Hi,

As the title suggests - I have an existing SBS 2008 Standard box, and would like to add SQL Standard 2008 to this.

I know I can install the "SQL 2008 for Small Business Server" if I upgrade to Premium SBS, but I dont want to do that as I already have the SQL 2008 Standard software and CALs.

I also know that I cannot purchase SBS 2008 Premium with 5 CALs and then use the the SQL 2008 Standard CALs I own to cover licencing.

Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ashilo,

This guide seems to refer to SQL 2005 not 2008 - nevertheless thanks for the input.

I emailed Microsoft in the end and this was the response:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Ben,

We have consulted the Technical Advisory team and they have confirmed that you can install SQL 2008 Standard on SBS domain, however it is not recommended because of security purposes as SBS is a domain controller.

You cannot use your SQL 2008 CALs on Small Business Server (SBS) 2008 Premium, you will require SBS 2008 Premium CALs for every User or Device trying to access the SBS Server 2008 Premium.
However in case of SBS 2008 Standard you can use your current SQL 2008 CALs if you install SQL 2008 Standard on SBS 2008 Standard Server.

The referance link that you have mentioned refers to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard for Small Business because it comes as a component of SBS Premium.

Hope this information is of help to you.
