Windows SBS 2008 Console has stopped working

After restarting my homemade SBS 2008 box I usually need to check the console to see if any services didn't start properly. After my latest windows update (PowerShell 2.0 and WinRM 2.0...) I haven't been able to open the console. It states that the console has "stopped working".

I'm also receiving similar crash messages when I open the 'Best Practices Analyzer' and 'Connect to the Internet Wizard' (manually).

Also relevant is that I'm not able to start the POP3 Connector for Exchange via services.msc

I thank you for any help you may able to provide.

Ok. Let's start with the easy one. What's the error you get when attempting to start POP3 Connector? Are there any new event log entries?

The POP3 Connector: "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

When I attempt to open the event viewer (eventvwr) I get a similar message to the console viewer above "Microsoft Management Console has stopped working". The problem details for the event viewer are below.

Description:

There are two possible POP3 connectors for SBS 2008. They are listed as Microsoft Exchange POP3 or Windows SBS POP3 Connector. Which one it you can't start. And it appears one of the dependent services listed on the Dependencies tab when you double click on the service name aren't running. So it's stopping the service as it can't get what it needs to function properly.

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

The requests for the following services to 'start' display "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

1) Microsoft Exchange POP3
2) Microsoft Exchange Transport (It's dependency 'Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology Service' is running)

Windows SBS POP3 Connector requires:
1) Microsoft Exchange Transport (not running, see above)
2) TCP/IP Protocol Driver
3) Windows Event Log (running)

Try manually starting the Exchange transport service and post any new event entries it creates.

I'm only getting Error 1053 as above. The event viewer crashes when I try to open it too.

I bit the bullet and restarted the server. After the restart the system console as well as the rest of the consoles started to work. Email started downloading again.

*As I noted in the question we've had some issues with this custom-built sever in the past after restarts.

Restarting solved the problem that probing the settings did not.
