many different image sizes  some have alot of width, some have alot of height

With proportional sizes ? I mean if the image is WxH = 200 x 100 px, then resizing
would give 100px (max) x 50px ?

I do not wish to resize (change the image)
just have the image display in a small 100px width by 100px height box
