Strange Excel Copies
I have a folder on a 2003 Terminal Server with about 40 Excel files in it. Using Office 2003.
I have remote users logging onto thes files to update them. The excel file has some VBA code
From time to time these files somehow create a copy of the files and it appears in the directory as typically C138EFA0. It is an Excel file, but does not have the xls extension and is listed as type files - attributes A
What is going on.
Do I need thiese files
How can I stop then appearing
Can I make them appear in another folder and use them as backups?
Thanks

It would appear that all users are creating these files - but not me.
The users do not access the same files - the files are specific to each user.

Actually I think I know what is doing this - the user permissions on the folder are set to rear write, but not to modify.
I dont want the users to be able to delete files or make new ones. When I log on as a Adminidtrator I have full rights.
Strange that Excel should be able to create a new files and then write ti to thie directory - any ideas?
Basically these files are teachers reports on their pupils and they add test to the cell in the Excel spreadsheet. The pupil's names are listed here and when the reports are fininshed they are imported into an Access database

To see if these files have meaninings you should try and do the fiollowing:
1) Try to isolate what user is creating these files
2) When you locate the user try opening the the normal file from his/her computer, once you close it Excel will display a list of files asking you if you still need them ... if not needed then choose the option to remove them (Excel prompt for 2 choices)
3) Examine the Security rights (user rights for this user on the files) maybe insufficent user rights creating these problems.
4) Are several users accessing the same file simultanousely ? if yes maybe that is what is creating these backup files
