iTunes sync (replace) Verizon iPhone 4 Contacts with iMac Address Book

How do I *replace* current Verizon 4 Contacts with *all* iMac Address Book contacts.

I tried iTunes Info > Sync Address Book Contacts > All Contacts + Advanced > Replace Information on this iPhone > Contacts

Text at bottom of window says: "During the next sync only, iTunes will replace the selected information on this iPhone with information from this computer."

The above did not work as expected. I went to considerable effort to manually update the iMac
Address Book hoping to 'replace', that is, *delete all* iPhone contacts and replace with iMac Address Book. How do I do this?

Example problem: in iMac Address Book there is one entry (Card?) for 'Sam Jones' (not real name); in Verizon 4 iPhone Contacts there are (after above sync) 3 entries for Sam Jones and 2 entries for Jones Sam. Only one of these entries is correct - same as iMac. iPhone 4 contacts were not deleted.

Seems 'replace' means add more data to iPhone and don't delete anything not identical to iMac Address Book.

I understand MobileMe adding (syncing) similar contacts to iPhone. Deleting sample contact from MobileMe, with appropriate iPhone MobileMe settings, will also delete contact from iPhone.

How can I do this as batch job? That is, remove all contacts from MobileMe.

Also, if MobileMe sync is stiill enabled, how will this affect future iPhone contact changes?

It sounds as if the problem you're having is that the address book is merely adding to your contact list. I had something similar happen with a friends iPhone. We eventually had to back up everything by contacts and reset the device. Once we had the contacts wiped, we were able to sync via whatever method we preferred (exchange, MobileMe, etc.)

As for the MobileMe question, if you continue to sync via MobileMe and have contacts stored there, altering MobileMe will effect the iPhone automatically.

Seems the best method is to work in MobileMe to cleanup the iPhone Contacts mess. What I need to figure out is how to get iMac contact database (golden) to MobileMe.

I work MobileMe with my 2-monitor PC; easier to cut and paste addresses/phone# etc. Also easier to delete multiple Cards.

Does not seem to be a single method to fix all contact issues.
