With SBS, the exchange part can download pop from an external email server to serve it up to the local user using their local exchange server so the user doesn't know its coming from a third party.  Is this possible in the normal versions of exchange?  I have sbs2008 r2 and exchange 2010.  I currently use a third party for email but would like to transition slowly by having exchange download the email from the third party until I migrate all the users settings over.

Do you have SBS2008 or Windows 2008 R2?

If SBS2008 then yes there is a POP3 connector.

If regular Windows 2008R2 and Exchange 2010 then the answer is yes but you need a 3rd party plugin.  See here: http://www.msexchange.org/software/POP3-Downloaders/

I do have regular windows 2008 R2 that Im trying to do this on.  Do you know if there is an IMAP version too?  Or maybe if the pop can sync with the server instead of download.

IMAP cannot be used to download to exchange.

You can set POP3 to leave a copy on the server and not download it
