I am logged into a word press website as admin.  When I click Pages-->Home--Edit, it is completely blank.     I know it is pulling in a blog post, and then some kind of themes or widgets and templates....where can I go to find out exactly what this homepage is doing?  I need to make some edits on this page, but i have no idea where to go to make the edits.  I did find the blog post the homepage is using, but that doesn't have what I need to edit.  I need to find all the other "things"  (pieces of code) this homepage is using so I can edit their codes.  Thanks!

Your home page is pulling your latest posts. You can change it by going to Settings>Reading> Front Page Displays, then choose Static Page and select the home page from the drop down list.

hi there.  i did that.  it says my front page is using a static page:
FontPage:  Home
Posts Page:  Blog

But the homepage is empty, it has nothing, not one letter of HTML code.  I need to edit some HTML on the front page.  How do I tell which template files / widgets, etc, the homepage is using?

So when you go to pages there is a page called home and you have text in the visual editor but nothing shows on your front page?

If that is so, you can possibly tell by looking in the right side of the page editor under the page templates menu bar.

If that doesn't work, you can always create a custom page, and then choose the custom page template when you go to HOME in the page editor. This will ensure that it will work.

Let me know if this is what you want to do, and I will give you the simple instructions.

hi there.  when i browse the homepage on the internet, it is a full page.  The text on the page is the blog post.  And there are a row of graphical icons beneath the blog post, and then a footer.  I want to change that row of graphical icons.

When i browse the homepage INSIDE the WP control panel, it is blank.  Nothing.  No html, zip.  I need to find the code that is referencing the row of graphical icons on the homepage so I can change it.  No other page on the entire website has that row of graphical icons (it is not global code).  There is something causing WP to place a row of graphical icons on my homepage...AND ONLY my homepage.   How can I find this?

There are several ways it could be happening. It is either by condition CSS classes or DIV's, or by using a PHP if is home page call. Or the index.php or single.php, or home.php if it has one is set to show the graphics. You can either provide a link to the page, or download FireBug for Firefox to view the code of the page, or use WebDeveloper Plugin for Firefox. If you use WebDeveloper you can click on Information>view object information and it will tell you what you need to know.

Here is the link to the two plug-ins, let me know if you need help, or send the link if you want me to check it for you:

here are some screenshots:

note the homepage is blank.

This I find interesting, the CSS file inside the CP shows nothing, yet when you manually load the CSS file via a URL, it is full of stuff.  I dont even know how to access the actual CSS file the site is using.

Look inside your header.php, it will say something like @imort..//style.css. You will need FTP access to get to the file so you can edit it.

So do you think Jeremy that the code to edit those 4 icons is inside the header.php file?  And this file cannot be edited inside WP control panel?

No, I think it is using the CSS import feature. It calls s css file that that is placed inside a folder other that the root of the theme. For instance you can make a CSS folder for a theme, then use an @ to call it to the theme through the header.php, in the "head" of the document. The import would look like this inside the header.php:
@import url("reset.css");

This is common these days with custom themes and more an more with free themes. I think it is an attempt to keep people from "mucking-up" their themes. I know that is where your CSS file is at, but I am not sure that is the problem. It could be that they have the page.php file with a loop that shows posts instead of a page loop. This would also do the same thing.

thanks Jeremy.  It looks like there is no way to edit some parts of the homepage via the WP control panel.
