remove vocals

Is there some free software or cheap software that does a good job of removing vocals from songs?  I know no software will do a great job but this is going to be used for practice.   I would prefer mac software but any will do.

For most songs, it's a matter of inverting one side of the stereo track.  If the vocals are mostly panned center, the two tracks will cancel out everything that is the same in each track (which vocals usually are) when one side is inverted, while leaving the instruments and everything that is not panned exactly center.

Here's how to do it in Audacity -- a free program for both mac and windows from http://audacity.sourceforge.net

1-Open the Track Menu and choose "Split Stereo Track"  This will give you 2 mono tracks
2-Select the lower track by clicking it in the area around the mute/solo buttons
3-From the Effects menu, select "Invert"
4-Using the track menus, change each track to "mono."

(from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=editing&i=remove-vocals )

You will also see that there is a Vocal Removal WIKI page for Audacity at:
