Whenever I have to do this I just put the file on my website then email a link to the file.  If the file is sensitive then password protect the directory.

so your reccomendation will be to set up an ftp site as opposed to paying for this type of service?
It doesn't even have to be ftp.  If you have a website just upload the file and send a http link to your clients.  If you need security you can password protect the directory and use SSL (https) for the download.
but is ftp a viable option?
Sure but it's a little more complicated to set up and I think it will require your clients to install FTP software.  I don't think browsers support secure ftp.

Do you have a website or are you planning on using an in house computer?
yes, we have a website and an in house computer is available to be used if needed. Are you saying that our website host can porvide this service to us? that is, to set it up?
You would probably have to do it through the control panel but you never know.  They might do it for you if it's a good hosting company.  You can ask.

It doesn't get any easier than using http though.  It's already set up.  Just make a folder on the site to store your downloads, password protect it and send the link to the file like this.
http://yoursite.com/downloads/yourfile.zip

If you have a SSL certificate you can use https to make it more secure.

If you are only going to have one file up there at a time and will remove it after a couple days then that's enough.  If you are going to have several files for different clients then you will want to make sure browsing is turned off for that directory.
i will followup with our hosting vendor- i also need to have a plan b or c if all fails. I need a solution within days.

Take a look at box.net
yes, i will in a few minutes. Can you also provide another vendor who provides this servive for companies in the health care business or pharmaceutical companies?
Trend Micro have a Safe Sync product for home use out at the moment with the business version coming online next month.  The beta version is available from the 8th March.  Here's the details:

What does SafeSync for Business do?

    * Backs up all your customer desired data to the cloud, automatically. An agent on their PCs automatically synchronises their data to cloud- based servers.
    * Gives every employee / user their own storage space.
    * Allows administrators to set up shared folders for members of the organisation.
    * Pushes data changes, using synchronisation technology, to all their devices on the same account, automatically - Smartphones, Tablets (iPads), laptops, desktop, etc. If your customers update one file on one device, changes are pushed out to all other devices.
    * Lets your customers access this data from any web-enabled device at anytime from anywhere.
    * Enables customers to simply share folders or files with any 3rd party instantly.
    * Creates virtual shared folders between certain team members for projects, etc.
    * Is a single web-based console for management of all clients access rights and storage.

What can it replace or be used instead of?

    * File Server / Network Attached Storage: The teamspace feature allows your customers to create shared areas for different users and teams.
    * Back-up solution: Automatically synchronises all files locally to your customers’ shared area in the cloud. Any changes or new files are instantly backed up to their online storage area.
    * VPN infrastructure: No need to have VPN to access internal file servers. With a simple internet connection, your customers can access all their documents in their online storage area.
    * FTP or ‘You send it’: Instantly share any file or folder with anyone. No uploading of files to an FTP or ‘You send it’ type solution.
    * Collaboration solutions: The built in team space shared area allows groups to work on specific files and folders.

Like what you see? Why don’t you sign up for the beta test of SafeSync for Business?

Beta testing starts 8th March 2011. Be one of the first to test this fantastic new solution! Please click here to register your interest in testing SafeSync for Business before it starts shipping.
