people do make a living from ad revenue, but its not simple, first do you want a site that makes money?Or  do you want a site? I'm in the second camp, I love the stuff I put online and making cash is a by product of that. If you want to make money and that's it, then you need to develop a site, optimise it for search engine listing (just google SEO techniques). Remember the content of your site will dictate revenue, mines a technical site which is about as low a return as you can get! But if you have a debt or mortgage site then you might get a few pounds per click rather than a few pence. depending on the value of the ads keyword (see word value here - on the columns turn on CPC or cost per click https://adwords.google.co.uk/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS# )

Then promote the site - you have two options, 1, the white hatted approach, a good place to start is look through the forums at digital point http://forums.digitalpoint.com/ this is a good reference point. You can even buy websites here that already tun a profit. The second approach is the black hatted one (the not strictly legal and spammy way of promoting your site (member agreement prohibits me posting a link to a site, but just google  blackhat and world).

Then look at your adds, they fall into two categories, pay per click (like google adsense) and pay per view (I don't use these, but at 1000 visitors a day now I might look at that this year).

Can you make money from adsense - yes! But reality check I've been devoloping a website and maintaining it for about 6-7 years I make about £70 a month - for that I do at least an hour and a half's work a day - don't seem that incredible now does it :)
