I have a Windows 7 64-bit system that has just started exhibiting a problem in Internet Explorer with the file dialog boxes.  The dialogs no longer display information in the left pane.

Any assistance on a resolution would be very much appreciated.

I've heard of this happening when running custom themes.  Sometimes reverting to the default Windows Aero theme will correct the problem.

If your navigation pane is still blank, try checking your Windows system files for errors by running:
SFC /scannow

I just noticed that the issue is not just with IE8 but all Microsoft Office 2010 products as well.

No response was received from anyone on Experts-Exchange that resolved the problem.  After doing further research, the issue turned out to be the ExplorerFrame DLLs in the System32 and SysWOW64 directories were not operating correctly.  The DLLs were either replaced by a program with an incompatible version or damaged.  After locating the same DLLs from a properly functioning install of Windows 7 64-bit and copying them over the malfunctioning DLLs, the system is now working as expected.

It appeared that a Theme had overwritten the ExplorerFrame.dll with an incompatible version for Windows 7 64-bit.
