HP MSL2024 Backup - Stuck in Recovery Mode - Close Mailslot

One of our HP MSL2024 units started acting up this past weekend going offline in Backup Exec.  The messages that appear on the LCD panel of the unit indicate recovery mode with the sound of tapes moving around, or it sounds idle and the display says close mailslot pointing to the left magazine of the unit.

The mailslot slot feature is disabled, and when it lets me to pull out the right and left magazines all tapes and the magazines look normal.

If I attempt to run an inventory or job, it starts but then hangs with no progress being indicated by the BUexec jobs, but it appears that both drives are busy.  It will stay like that until I either cancel it or the drives go offline in BUexec.

Any ideas what is going on and how to correct it?

It does sound like it might be a library problem.   Can you download HP's Library and Tape Tools and run a library diagnostic?   The program is free for download from http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ltt/index.html   (see the "link to download" in the gray box).
