Whats the best way to...
1. convert audio from a .wmv to something I can pop into any CDplayer and play
and
2. How can I convert the .wmv audio to a MP3 or is it better to convert to a CD first and then rip to a MP3?

Thanks,

Use iTunes - set the "Import Options" to mp3 instead of AAC, then you can drag your wmv files into a playlist... it will ask you if you want to convert to mp3, and then you can burn the playlist to an audio CD.  Be sure to select Audio CD and not mp3 or data CD.
