I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

did i get your Q right ?
You want your script be able to detect if a tape is inserted and the decide:
1.) tape IS inserted -> backup to tape
2.) tape is NOT inserted -> backup to disk ?

I dont't think it's possible.
So you better should add two backup-jobs (if your timeframe is ok for this szenario)

1.) do backup to disk to disk
2.) do backup disk to tape
