send subfolder access to an index page within the subfolder using htaccess

Hi,

I've played around with this with no success, hoping someone has the answer!  Basically we have a sub folder on our site:

www.mysite.com/folder

when people go to /folder or /folder/ I want it to load the index page for that folder:

www.mysite.com/folder/index.php

I've tried 301 combinations and rewrites but my knowledge of htaccess is rubbish... the best I've managed is for the url to repeat on itself because the page I want it to go to is inside the folder I'm setting a redirect for...

Please help!

Thanks,
Matt
