Link to local file in wiki

Our company has a corporate wiki and we are trying to include links to local files on the server. The links could be to like \\servername\file or file:///Z:/path/file. We have uniform drive mappings so either would work. I can't seem to find the syntax to get it to work.
I tried using <a href=, but <a> isn't one of the html tags that wikipedia supports.
I'm not sure if I picked good zones or not.

I may have found it.
Modify the includes/Parser.php and add this line under the lines that look similar
$text = $this->subReplaceExternalLinks( $text, 'file', false );
I'm about to test it out as soon as the vmware player downloads so I can get at the file system.

Wikimedia doesn't understand smb-links by default. Unless you want to share those files through a web-server, you need to have an extension on you wiki, like this:

That says that it will "convert file:///// links to smb:// and vice versa." Neither kind work so what's the point? We all are using Windows, I just can't get any kind of file link to show up as a hyperlink.
