Using Advanced Format hard drives w/o problems with Windows XP - best practices?

I would like to use AF (advanced format) hard drives (like the Western Digital EARS series or some of the Samsung 1TB/ 2 TB drives - but without the headaches and risks associated with using teh Drive Align tool and possible data loss if improperly repartitioned - in a mixed environment where such drives are routinely used for system (boot) partitions or data partitions under both windows 7, server 2008 and XP Professional.
I read somewhere that if I partition orignally under with windows 7 (SP1) or server 2008 R2 SP1 then all is taken care of- as long as I do NOT repartition later such drives. Is that correct ?
