Hi Experts,

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I want to turn on VSS Shadow Copy Service - so that I can save Previous Versions.

Windows Help says:

Shadow Copies of Shared Folders. This feature is an extension to the Shared Folders Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

To open Shadow Copies of Shared Folders, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management. In the console tree, right-click Shared Folders, click All Tasks, and then click Configure Shadow Copies.

But when I right-click Shared Folders, the only menu items are View, Export List and Help.
I have also clicked my way all around the Actions section on the right hand side of the screen - still no sign of Configure Shadow Copies?

Regards,
Leigh

Hi AtB,

Sorry, I not quite sure by what you meant by "See first replay"?

If you meant me to:

Create this registry parameter:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Parameters\ DisableDownLevelTimewarp

I created a new DWORD value = 1.

It did not fix the problem.

Hi AtB,

I navigated to the Control Panel | System | System Protection as described in the TechRepublic artice.
But the options that are there do not let me configure anything to do with VSS.

How to run any project with ease

Manage projects of all sizes how you want. Great for personal to-do lists, project milestones, team priorities and launch plans.
- Combine task lists, docs, spreadsheets, and chat in one
- View and edit from mobile/offline
- Cut down on emails

These 2 screendumps show what the options look like.

This is not the right part of the system to switch on VSS Shadow Copy Service to save Previous Versions.
I have done this for a Server 2008 system - it should be where Windows Help (see my original question) says it is.

See below: the screendump shows how you get to the VSS Shadow Copy Service configuration on a Server 2008 system.

The "All Tasks" part is not appearing on my Windows 7 system.

Shadow copies are automatically saved as part of a system restore point. When System Restore is turned on , W7/Vista automatically creates shadow copies of any files that have been changed since the time the last restore point was made. As per my knowledge there is no shadow copy option in "shared folders" of windows 7. Instead it is "previous version tab" on folders.

You can enable it using configure tab (see your first screen shot)
Restart the computer
Check the VSS service (manual)
