looks like the user you are using to export the mail doesn't have the appropriate permissions to the mailbox.

See here for how to assign the permissions required to use exmerge properly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821897

Please bear in mind by default members of the Domain Administrators group DO NOT have access to all mailboxes.

exmerge has finished with no errors.

the PST is 2.1GB, but the mailbox is 2.4GB.  Does the PST use compression as well?

No, you will have to use filtering (as explained in my guide) if the mailbox is over 2GB because there is a limitation of 2GB with Exmerge.  http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_2710-Export-mailboxes-using-Exmerge-and-Exchange-2003.html

i see, presumably this limitation does not apply when exporting as a PST from outlook 2010?

also, do you know of a way to find the earliest message in the mailbox?

correct, the limitation does not apply if using Outlook 2010.

As for the earliest message, just use outlook and sort by date?
