Hello,

I have an application that I am trying to load on my Windows 2008 R2 server.  The application installs MSSQL 2005 too.  When I am completeing the installation the install tries to connect to the database but it cannot.  It gives a generic error: "Communication module is not valid.  Driver has not been correctly installed"  I have looked in Event View for more infomration and did not see anything.

I can go into 2005 SQL Sever Manager Studio Express and login to the database, etc..

Is this a custom application? It sounds like it is trying to use the incorrect database connection driver (e.g. trying to use a SQL 2000 ODBC driver for a SQL 2005 connection, etc)

This is a purchase application.   It can use either MSSQL2000 or 2005. I requested 2005 and it installs mssql 2005 express.   I do have SQL2000 loaded and running on the system too.

Ya, it sounds like it might be using a 2000 specific-driver to connect to the 2005 database.

I'd contact the vendor about how you can detect whether or not that is the case. Explain that you have both DBMS versions installed and that you can connect to both okay from your desktop.

Are your AD admin tools letting you down?

Managing Active Directory can get complicated.  Often, the native tools for managing AD are just not up to the task.  The largest Active Directory installations in the world have relied on one tool to manage their day-to-day administration tasks: Hyena. Start your trial today.

I think I will try to load the app/database back to SQL2000 to see if I get the same results.  Software support not available this weekend....

I was able to connect to the MSSQL 2000 database with the application.  I am not able to connect to the MSSQL 2005 database for the application.

How can I load the drivers for MSSQL 2005?

I think both SQLs can liver on the same server, right?

They should be able to live on the same server, absolutely. Its most likely that the drivers for both are installed and the application is just trying to use the wrong one for 2005. Like I said, I think you'll have to take it up with their support. At least you have done some troubleshooting, so they'll know it works on 2k but not 2k5 and it may even be a known issue for them.

I completely uninstall SQL 2005 and all of its componets, rebooted and reinstalled the application in its entirity.  That worked...
