Unread messages appear in my outlook, but all of the messages in the inbox have been read.

How can I get rid of them

You are probably viewing your inbox through a filtered view.  Please reset your views and make sure nothing is being filtered, then the unread emails should appear.

If you right-click the Inbox and choose Mark All As Read - does the unread count reset back to 0?
