How to generate a mail from SharePoint Column?

Hi, I got a requirement from one of my client that he is having some Bank and Policy related documents with some expiry date.  

Now what he wants whenever he uploads some Policy and entre some date in Expiry Date column with each Policy documents, so 5 or 6 days before he should get a mail that Policy is going to expiry after 5 or 6 days, for example, if Expiry date is on 4/10/2011 (10th April) for some Policy documents so he should get a mail on 4/5/2011 (5th April) that your ABC Policy is going to expiry on 4/10/2011.

Is there any column is available in SharePoint 2007?

You can set a simple workflow for this, No out of the box features though the capability is available, People use timer jobs or workflow or batch processes, Here is a example :
