Windows XP always freezing using powerterm

I have one of my customer that have 50 computesr but 5 of them are running XP Pro - All the Windows XP patches are installed.  On each computer only the Powerterm software is installed and running.

Each computer has static IP (192.168.1.201 to 205)

For a reason I dont understand even if each computer has a static IP address, they are keep changing to 192.168.0.x or 192.168.2.x network

There is only on network setup on their firewall (192.168.1.x)

Since the IP Address of each computer change they lose their connection and freeze the system.

What Services on Windows that can change IP Address even if there is a static setup ?

This customers have 50 computers on their network and only the one running powerterm are frozen
if it was a network problem all computers should be doing the same but no

I have place a service call to powerterm support and this is a none issue for them

I have place a service call to Watchguard support to have check their firewall configuration and they said that nothing in the firewall that can make an IP address change

Since each computer came with Windows XP installed.   I have reformat two of them again, one with Powerterm and one with no Powerterm and only the one with the Powerterm installed keep freezing

Is it a software issue or a network - Powerterm Support are telling me it is a network issue and Watchguard Support are telling a software issue.

What it is ?

How Can I fix it ?

Maybe this was only my experience, but i had a LOT of problems with terminal emulation software.
problems reaching from amd cpu timing problems, to problem with first 64 bit cpu (even if a 32-bit windows was installed), and hyperthreading problems.

i am pretty sure the ip changes are the real problem, but i saw the same problems when one of my first mentioned cpu related problems appeared.

first you should try to use connect with different terminal emulation and see if its working wihtout freezing over a longer period (try telnet.exe).

My customer does not want to test other product than Powerterm

I agree also it should work, i have installed over 3000 computers with Powerterm and I never had any issue before.  I honest believe it is a network problem but I have changed their switch, their firewall, all their network cables, new UPS, new Linux Server, all computers have static address.

The only two change I made,

First, I convert all their files and programs from an Unix server to a Linux Server

Second, the Linux Server is not onsite like was the Unix server

They are using a VPN to connect to Linux Server.

Both firewalls are Watchguard X20e - Same VPN configuration, same encryption

Waiting for more suggestions

It seems to me if the client has 50 machines and only 5 lock up, why not update the ones that lock-up?

You can probably also test the RAM of the the ones that lock up - are they older, have less ram/processor speed in the first place?

Hi JRoyse,

These 5 computers that are always lock-up first, they are brand new Dell Computers with Windows XP Pro and running only Powerterm to connect to the New Linux Server.  I have refortmat 2 of them and only the one I have re-install the Powerterm keep freezing.  These machines have 3 Gig of Ram with 250Gig harddrive.

try to disable CPU features in bios, thats the only thing that comes to my mind here

I would check:
1. Windows drivers for the Dell PCs.  Make sure they are up-to-date, especially the video card
2. Bios updates on the dell pcs
3. Disable graphic aceleration on the windows desktop to (troubleshooting tab)
4. test the ram (memtestx86)
5. check the C:\Windows\ folder for a minidump folder.. if windows crashes it may left behind a memory dump to check for a resolution

I still the error, it seems not to be a hardware or a bios issue.

So far, Powerterm support check and did not fine any problem on their product
Microsoft support check and did not fine any problem too
Watchguard support check and same thing did not fine any problem on their product

Bizzard !!!!

My next call will be with Dell since they are Dell System but if I remove the powerterm software the freezing goes away

you could try to use another NIC, i allways try to avoid on-board NIC's or non intel networkcards even on desktop systems.

I never found why Powerterm was freezing my customer systems but I have installed TinyTerm instead the freezing went away.  I dont want to leave this post open for nothing.  Was it the best solution, i dont thing so because I dont know what was causing the problem and the support of Powerterm is very very bad when the one of TinyTerm is excellent.
