I am having trouble with DVD writers offlate. I have tried 4 SATA DVD writers (LG 22x dvd write) since Jan 2011 and each one of them failed. It seems the the writer struggles to read the disk. Each one of them worked for atleast a day. I was able to get about 2-3 disks out of them after many tries and many damaged disks. I also noticed that one of the cables from the SATA power connector connected to the writer was disconnected so i replaced that connector. I have had a decent experience with IDE drives which have worked for 6 months per drive writing about a 100 disks each.

How do i troubleshoot this?

you may have a combination , or one of these problems :
-bad motherboard CD controller
-bad connector or cable
-bad driva
-bad media
-bad ram.

you can test the ram with memtest86+ from ubcd  : http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
all the rest, you can swap or test on another pc
you can also use burninTest for diagnosing the drive  : http://www.passmark.com/download/index.htm

I swapped the power and data sata cable with the HDD and it seems to be working for now. I have 2 HDDs and one writer. Checked the event viewer in control panel and no write errors still. I will burn a few more mad men DVDs before I close this thread.

>>  I swapped the power and data sata cable with the HDD and it seems to be working for now.  <<   so it could be:
bad cable, or connector
did you try another burning software yet?   eg cdburnerxp  http://cdburnerxp.se/
