Some malware can have this effect.

Download and install the following programs:
CCleaner www.ccleaner.com
Cleanup http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=69
MalwareBytes www.malwarebytes.com
SuperAntiSpyware http://www.superantispyware.com/

Run Cleanup, do not reboot or logoff.
Run CCleaner, both its cleanup function and registry cleaner.
Run a full scan with malwarebytes, delete anything it finds.
Run a full scan with SAS, delete anything it finds.
Reboot
Repeat the first four steps until system shows as clean.
(Note - you may also need an antivirus, I've been using Avast www.avast.com lately and am happy with how well it works)

Once the system is clean, do a search on C: drive for a file named "hosts".  This may be in more than one place.  Open the various instances of "hosts" one at a time and delete all entries except for "127.0.0.1   localhost"

Then reboot again and open Firefox.
