Version Control for web design group

My team would like to start using some type of version control for our design and web site projects. I know this is more often used with software development but would like to use something in this nature.

Type of projects: photoshop layouts, wordpress sites (up to 80 pages), email templates, banners,

We're looking at SVN of git.

Our development projects are on internal servers and local machines.

Our production files are hosted through a servie.

The hosting service we use is outsourced and they do not allow SVN or git, so we would SVN or git to manage the workflow/content.

My question is how would we get stable content onto our production server (hosted sites)? I'm just not familiar with version control. Would it be as simple as just FTP'ng files as we would normally do.

I'm not too familiar with version control either, however, I have worked with people in the past that use version control for web development and design.  Though the versioning and commits are maintained through SVN (or the like), the web developers still used FTP to copy over their changes.  Hoped that helped.
