Microsoft Sharepoint Install Error - Latin1_General_BIN

When installing sharepoint services 3.0 I run into the below error when selection of my server and database has been input.  I am running Microsoft Server 2005.

I found some information on the web which points to a SQL Server re install but I am hoping this is not true.

The specified SQL server instance has invalid sort order Latin1_General_BIN.  Choose a server instance that performs case-insensitive and non-binary comparisons.

Any help appreciated.   Richard

You could do one of two things.

You could reconfigure your SQL server (the instance that you are trying to connect to) to have the correct Collation (which is where I think your problem lies).

If this cannot be done, you could create a new instance and set the correct collation on that, and then have SharePoint try to connect back.

This should work.  I ran into this error sometime last year and used this tip from a friend of mine to have everything working nicely.

Also just a thought after asking my DBA friend (sitting in the cube next to me ^-^):
She seems to think that collation cannot be changed on system databases, thus if you are trying to connect back to them for some reason you will have to uninstall/reinstall SQL on that server.

Of course, SharePoint creates all of the databases it needs, so I don't think that's an issue...just thought I'd post it as a tip.
